A superb lens which offers a broad focal range more suited to wildlife and motorsport photographers, albeit in bright conditions.
This copy showed quite a drop off in edge sharpness wide open at the shorter end of the zoom. Although most users would be at the longer end, so its not really an issue.
The EF 300 f4 probably has the edge with and without a 1.4x teleconverter but would obviously lack the versatility!
The 1st generation image stabilisation is a little clunky and the AF is quite fast.
Doesn’t work well with 1.4x and 2x teleconverters, as the aperture jumps to ~f8 and f11 respectively at the longer end and the viewfinder becomes very dark, although some have had luck with the tape trick.
